Airport traffic flow and vehicle parking improvements
Major underground service upgrades are complete, and the vehicle parking network opens in mid-March. Plans were underway for the terminal redevelopment when the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic landed in 2020. Rod Evans, GM says, “The airport has forged ahead with landside redevelopments, which include innovative, new car rental facilities.”

An iconic Boab moves to the centre of the transforming Airport
The impressive tree, estimated to be 100-years-old or more, was located in a private fenced area, unseen by the airport’s community. Its new home is a construction zone that will become a welcoming new entrance to the passenger terminal. The boab will be a crowning piece in the plaza zone for everyone to enjoy at Port Hedland International Airport.

Port Hedland International Airport to bolster community resilience
St John WA is partnering with Port Hedland International Airport (PHIA) to provide publicly accessible defibrillators to priority locations in the Hedland community. PHIA has contributed $15,000 towards a range of initiatives, including the new defibrillators, 75 volunteer-designed shirts for the ‘Green Dream Team’ ambulance volunteers and contribution towards a community BBQ trailer. PHIA is delighted to fund six new public access defibrillators and eight cabinets to the Port and South Hedland communities as we know what an important role they can play when someone has a cardiac arrest.

PHIA takes the Flying Doctor to new heights
Port Hedland International Airport (PHIA) will continue supporting Pilbara communities by extending its partnership with the Flying Doctor. PHIA will waive all landing fees for the Flying Doctor at its Port Hedland operational base until 2022, enabling the Flying Doctor to redirect funds to providing critical health services to those who need it most in regional and remote WA.

Second taxiway open for business
Milestones were celebrated; including the completion of an $18 million set of upgrades to airside pavements and infrastructure to improve safety, security, flexibility and capability. In a symbolic ground-breaking, the $25 million passenger terminal transformation which is due for completion in the second quarter of 2021
