Port Hedland
Port Hedland is a dynamic town in Western Australia’s Pilbara region set along a rugged and picturesque coastline. It is a place of vast horizons, story and discovery, of people and possibility; where the profoundness of the past meets with the potency of the future.
Often referred to as the friendliest community in the region, Port Hedland boasts a unique local character and diversity – from an ancient landscape that is home to some of the world’s oldest continuing cultures, to its natural resources and new industry, to leading indigenous art.
Our original inhabitants, the Karriyarra people, call the place Marapikurrinya for the hand-shaped formation of the tidal creeks coming off the natural harbour.
Our lifestyle is relaxed and open. Being on the ocean, we enjoy a variety of aquatic leisure activities including superb fishing, whale watching and admiring nesting flatback turtles. Millstream and Karijini National Parks are within easy driving distance, while Broome and the Kimberley are also within reach.
We have two main residential centres – Port Hedland and South Hedland – with a wide range of professional, cultural, recreational and government services. Public art is scattered throughout the area paying homage to our history, culture and industry. The town’s industrial hub is Wedgefield which is located between Port and South Hedland.

Matt Dann Cultural Centre – offers a range of services for the community including box office movies, live theatre, comedy, music and venue hire opportunities. Marquee Park Splash & Play - is a fantastic water park and features a playground, water play area, open spaces, performance area and is connected to surrounding residential areas through a network of cycle ways. It is located on the intersection of Cottier Drive, Kennedy Street and Dale Street in South Hedland.
